Class of 2025 - A Scholarship Program for Maya Nurses
Two years ago, Hospitalito Atitlán, a small non-profit hospital in the Guatemalan highlands, took a visionary step to improve healthcare for the Maya in the Atitlán region.
Nursing has been identified as having the potential for making the biggest impact on a transformation of healthcare delivery to a safer, higher quality, and more cost-effective system.
Limited access to nursing education has resulted in an insufficient number of nurses who speak a Maya language, creating barriers to quality medical care and leading to worse health outcomes for the indigenous population. Discrimination against indigenous patients in national hospitals further exacerbates this issue.
The nursing school will aid in community development by producing 30 qualified nurses each year to work in clinics, community projects, and government hospitals. The program needs support for need-based scholarships, training materials, laboratories, uniforms and professional mentorship. We believe all people should have access to healthcare education and services in their maternal language.
Sponsors will receive photos and information about the student they help.
All donations are tax deductible through our U.S. nonprofit partner, Amigos Hospitalito Atitlán.
